The three-year project was announced by Children's Secretary Ed Balls who said it would protect the country's most vulnerable youngsters.

He said: "Most families can provide essential home safety equipment to keep their children safe. Vulnerable families often struggle to buy stairgates, socket covers or fireguards.

"The Government wants to help all families keep their children safe from harm, no matter where they live or what their background.

"This is why we will set out in the upcoming Children's Plan a new Home Safety Equipment scheme.

"This is a great scheme which will provide practical and targeted help to vulnerable families to help keep their children safe."

Government figures show children from poorer backgrounds, and especially the under-fives, are at higher risk of accidental injury.
