Home town welcome for swimmer Becky

Thousands of people are to line the streets of Rebecca Adlington's home town as the double gold medal winner is recognised for her achievements at the Olympics with an open-top bus tour.

The 19-year-old swimmer from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, took gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle in Beijing, turning her into the town's greatest sporting success.

The swimming pool where she trained and a Mansfield pub will be renamed after her, but not before she is presented with a pair of gold Jimmy Choo shoes by the town's mayor Tony Egginton.

The £460 hand-made shoes, called Clue, are appropriately made out of watersnake and have been donated by Jimmy Choo.

Adlington, known as Becky to friends and relatives, will be picked up from her home at 5pm in a golden Rolls Royce, which will deliver her to a press conference at Mansfield's civic centre.

She will then take centre stage on an open-top bus tour through the town, accompanied by her mother Kay, 48, father Stephen, 50, and two sisters Laura, 21, and 24-year-old Chloe.

After the bus reaches Mansfield's market place, her two races will be replayed on a giant screen, followed by a fireworks display. She will then return to the town's civic centre for a private party.

Mr Egginton said he expected a crowd of about 15,000 to take to the streets to welcome Adlington home.

He said: "To reach the very top of any sport requires years of hard work, focus and complete dedication, all traits which Rebecca has in abundance.

"What's more, this success couldn't have happened to a nicer girl. Rebecca is a credit to herself, her family and Mansfield, both in and out of the pool. She truly is the pride of Mansfield."
