Homes evacuated after bomb found

A number of homes were evacuated after what appeared to be a home-made bomb was found at a house, police said.

Officers found the device during a routine inquiry on Hurstwood Road in Sunderland, at the property of a man arrested earlier in the day on a separate matter.

The man is now helping Northumbria Police with their inquiries about the object, which "appeared to be a home-made explosive", a spokesman said.

Neighbouring properties were evacuated and a cordon was put up for several hours while a bomb disposal team from the Royal Logistics Corps made the device safe and police conducted a search of the house.

Police said the device would require further examination.
