'Humble' Benn launches deputy bid

Hilary Benn sought to kick-start his campaign for Labour's deputy leadership with an impassioned appeal to the party's 200,000 members.

The International Development Secretary, who has had a slow start to the contest, said real leadership meant having the "humility to listen" to the party's rank and file.

Mr Benn struggled to muster enough MPs' nominations to make the ballot paper this week, but his campaign team insisted that he had strong support among the party membership.

At the official launch of his campaign in London's East End, Mr Benn said: "Let the debate begin. Let us discuss ideas. Let us talk straightforwardly about the future we want.

"Let us set out the practical steps we can take together to make Britain a better, fairer country.

"No politician can create this society alone, as real leadership means having the humility to listen as well as the courage to act.

"The corridors of power belong to the British people, and making sure your voice is heard along them is why I am standing to be deputy leader."
