Hundreds face Fisher-Price recall

Hundreds of UK consumers have contacted Fisher-Price after a recall of almost a quarter of a million toys and high chairs amid safety concerns, parent company Mattel said.

Thursday's announcement was part of a wider US-led recall of more than 10 million items after reports of injuries to children.

The company has recalled 72,763 high chairs from the UK after 14 reports of problems in the US, including seven children requiring stitches.

The four chairs recalled in the UK are the Cow Over The Moon Healthy Care High Chair, the Link-a-doos Deluxe Plus Healthy Care High Chair, the Flutterbye Dreams Deluxe Plus Healthy Care High Chair and the Aquarium Healthy Care High Chair.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said children could fall on pegs on the back of the high chairs used to store the tray, resulting in cuts and other injuries.

The chairs were sold through major UK retailers between September 2001 and last month.

Another 165,090 products with inflatable balls have also been recalled here after the CPSC said there had been more than 50 reports in the US of the valve of the ball detaching and posing a choking hazard.

UK products affected include the Baby Playzone Crawl and Cruise Playground, Baby Playzone Crawl and Slide Arcade, Baby Gymtastics Play Wall, Ocean Wonders Kick and Crawl Aquarium, the Bop and Bounce Ball and the Bat and Score Goal. The items were sold between July 2001 and July 2008.

A further 6,107 Little People Wheelies Stand 'n' Play Rampway toys sold between April and September this year have also been recalled after reports that the wheels on the cars could come off and pose a choking hazard.

A UK spokeswoman for Mattel said "several hundred" people had called a specially set up helpline since Thursday's announcement.
