The devastated wife and three daughters of Mr Newlove wept and held each other as they were joined by scores of mourners for the service.
Mr Newlove, 47, who was a sales manager and part-time DJ from Cheshire, suffered head injuries after confronting teenagers outside his home in Warrington on Friday, August 10.
He was taken to Warrington Hospital but died on Sunday, August 12.
Three youths and an adult have been charged with murder.
Mr Newlove's coffin was carried into Christ Church, Padgate, Warrington, by six members of his family.
The death of Mr Newlove, who had earlier survived stomach cancer, sparked a national debate about restrictions on the sale of alcohol.
The Chief Constable of Cheshire Police, Peter Fahy, called for the legal age for drinking to be increased to 21.
He later said under-age drinking was a child protection issue and parents who refused to take action should face tougher sanctions through care proceedings and the criminal justice system.
Senior police officers were among the mourners along with council dignitaries.
