A study found that women who were overweight from the age of 36 had higher hysterectomy rates than those who were normal weight.

Women who were obese also had higher rates than those of normal weight from the age of 43.

Women who experienced the biggest weight gain between the ages of 36 and 53 also had increased risk of hysterectomy in later adulthood, according to the study of 1,790 British women.

The findings were published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Its editor-in-chief, Professor Philip Steer, said: "There are many health difficulties associated with obesity and the study shows that, particularly after the age of 36, being overweight or obese can be linked to hysterectomy in later life.

"There are risks associated with hysterectomy and these are heightened if the patient is obese.

"With a growing prevalence of obesity in the community, the study findings are a cause of concern."

The study was based on the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD), also known as the 1946 British birth cohort. It involved people born in the first week of March 1946 and followed up until they were aged 57.

The findings were not affected by factors such as how many children a woman had, her socio-economic status or how old she was when she first got her period.
