The Bollywood actress became a household name in 2007 amid a racism storm which prompted thousands of Celebrity Big Brother viewers to complain.
Shetty said she was glad she patched things up with Goody, who died aged 27 on Sunday after battling cervical cancer.
Speaking to Richard and Judy's show on the TV channel Watch, Shetty accepted that she owed Goody for the profile that their association gave her.
She said: "She was the architect of my fame, and I give her the credit for that.
"It's been a learning curve for all the viewers watching Big Brother how it's important to think before you speak, how feelings are important. I really believe that Jade also learnt from that whole episode.
"Then again, her coming back into my life two years later, and we being able to become friends and putting that into the past, is again something that was karma and was meant to happen, it was destiny.
"And I'm so glad that happened as I'd never have been able to forgive myself."
On the last time she spoke to Goody, Shetty reflected: "It was two days before she got married, she invited me and I congratulated her and she seemed very happy.
"She led a very short life, but she's seen it all - she's seen the highs, the lows, she's had children at such a young age, she's married."
