Sana Ali, 17, and her unborn child both died following the attack at her home in Bury, Greater Manchester.
The teenager, who was originally from Pakistan, moved to the UK five years ago and married a British Muslim man, who is now aged 24. She was two months pregnant with the couple's first child.
Her sister-in-law discovered Ms Ali's blood-soaked body in an upper bedroom of the property on Throstle Grove. She called emergency services who rushed the teenager to Fairfield Hospital but they were unable to save her or her foetus.
A post-mortem examination concluded she died as a result of stab wounds to the chest and abdomen, police said.
Police have ordered extra patrols in the area in a bid to reassure the local community.
Murder squad detectives said there was no sign of a forced entry and nothing appeared to have been stolen from the large two-storey detached home.
Detective chief inspector Keith Dillon said Ms Ali lived at the house with her husband, his brother and her parents-in-law. At the time of the attack, her parents-in-law were out of the country on holiday.
DCI Dillon said: "She has a number of injuries. It does look to be a violent attack. We are treating this as a murder inquiry, but have a completely open mind at this moment in time, as it is very early on. Until we have more information I would just like to make a general appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
Asked whether it appeared to be an honour killing, DCI Dillon added: "I haven't got any thoughts on that. We are interviewing the family to find out all the background. I am keeping an open mind on absolutely everything. That doesn't mean I think it is or that I think it is not."
