Police in Turin on Thursday arrested a 63-year-old man for allegedly abusing one of his daughters over a 25-year period and his 41-year-old son for allegedly abusing his own four daughters.
But several family members - including the elder man's wife and some adult daughters and sons - defended the father and blamed the son for all the abuse, the Turin newspaper La Stampa reported.
Two of the adult children told Italy's Sky TG24 TV they believed their father was innocent and said their brother had committed some kind of abuse, without disclosing exactly what kind.
And defence lawyers quoted in Milan daily Il Giornale said their clients denied wrongdoing.
The Turin case immediately drew comparisons to that of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man recently convicted of holding his daughter captive for 24 years in the basement of his house and fathering her seven children.
But authorities said the women and girls in the Turin case were not held captive.
