Indecency quiz for ex-police boss

A former chairman of Humberside Police Authority has been arrested for gross indecency in Northern Ireland.

Hull City councillor Steven Bayes, 45, was detained in his room at a hotel in the centre of Belfast.

It is understood he had been under surveillance.

Police in the city on Tuesday refused to confirm the identity of the man, but said a 45-year-old man had been arrested for gross indecency and other offences. They were not specified.

Bayes, a Labour member of Hull City Council, was detained in his hotel room just before 9am on Monday. He was taken away for questioning and later released on bail.

It is not known if anybody else was with him at the time, although one source in Belfast said he may have been on his own.

Once police finish their inquiries a file will be submitted to the Public Prosecution Service, which will decide if he should face charges.

Bayes who represents the Orchard Park and Greenwood areas of Hull is seeking nomination to become the Labour candidate for Hull East after the former deputy prime minister John Prescott steps down.

Humberside Police later searched the Labour Party offices and lounge at Hull's Guildhall as part of the investigation.

A spokesman confirmed: "We have been asked by the PSNI to assist with inquiries."
