Iraq crash death soldier named

A British soldier who died from injuries he suffered in a road traffic accident in southern Iraq has been named.

Guardsman Stephen Ferguson, 31, of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, who was originally from Lanarkshire, was travelling in a Warrior armoured vehicle when it was involved in an accident in Basra province on Wednesday.

He was taken to the field hospital at Basra Air Station and flown to the UK for treatment, but died from his injuries on Thursday.

Guardsman Ferguson - known as "Fergie" to friends - was on a routine patrol near Basra city when the Warrior he was driving slid into a canal while manoeuvring in the dark.

His fellow soldiers freed him from the vehicle and gave him first aid, but his injuries later proved fatal.

His commanding officers and fellow members of 1st Battalion Scots Guards paid tribute to his loyalty and "wry and infectious" sense of humour.

A keen supporter of Motherwell football club, Guardsman Ferguson used to quip to Army mechanics after they had repaired his vehicles: "If you can fix them, then I can break them".

Lieutenant Colonel William Swinton, commanding officer of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, said the battalion felt "a deep and profound sorrow for his loss".

"Stephen was a superb infantry soldier and a proud Scots Guardsman. He made a success of everything he turned his hand to," he said.

"He was well known across the Battalion, and had served in many parts of it. He was fiercely loyal to his Regiment, and to his friends. I have seldom heard so many tributes paid by those of us he has left behind."
