The soldier, from 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, died in the Al Ashar district in central Basra, the MoD said.
He was providing top cover protection for a Warrior armoured vehicle on a routine patrol when he was killed by small arms fire.
The death is the latest chapter in a bloody month for soldiers in Iraq.
The killing brings the total number of British fatalities since the hostilities in Iraq began to 145, and is the 11th death this month.
A statement from the MoD said that the unnamed soldier was evacuated to Basra Palace but died from his injuries.
The statement said: "No other soldiers were hurt in the incident. The soldier's next of kin have been informed and have requested a period of grace before further details are released."
The death came four days after two British soldiers were killed when their armoured vehicle was hit by a bomb blast in Iraq.
They were named by the MoD as Corporal Ben Leaning, 24, and Trooper Kristen Turton, 28, of The Queen's Royal Lancers Battle Group.
The troops were patrolling in the southern province of Maysan when the device exploded.
