IT projects 'running 86 years late'

Government computer projects are running a total of 86 years behind schedule and £1.4 billion over budget, it has been reported.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the longest delay was at the Department for Work and Pensions where a new IT system to enforce child maintenance payments was running seven years late.

The Ministry of Defence, where a new satellite communication system is £885 million over budget, accounted for £1.14 billion of the cost overruns.

The figures were obtained by the Liberal Democrats through parliamentary written questions submitted to all Whitehall departments.

Lib Dem Treasury spokesman Jeremy Browne said the figures raised serious questions about the Government's determination to press on with the controversial NHS computerisation programme.

"This Government's record on IT is lamentable," he said.

"Time and time again it wastes millions of pounds of taxpayers' money on IT projects which are delayed, ineffectual and over budget.

"It is disturbing that even with a track record as bad as the Government's, Gordon Brown is determined to plough on with the hugely expensive NHS IT scheme.

"How can people be expected to have any faith in a Government which continues to be so inept and inefficient?"
