It's time for a change, say Tories

The Conservatives are hoping to connect with 21 million voters before their annual conference with the launch of an online advertising campaign under the slogan "It's time for a change".

It is the first time a political party has launched a campaign entirely online and is intended to outline key messages ahead of the Blackpool conference at the end of the month.

A total of nine adverts, each detailing a specific policy pledge, will be placed on Facebook and national newspaper websites. They include commitments to fix the UK's "broken" society, teaching by ability, fighting hospital closures, and a referendum on the EU treaty.

It has been a testing summer for Tory leader David Cameron, with a series of high profile setbacks. This week former party chairman and deputy leader Michael Ancram accused him of "trashing" the party's heritage.

Mr Ancram urged Mr Cameron to give the party back its "soul" by returning to core values on issues such as tax, Europe and marriage

He was the most senior traditionalist Tory so far to "go public" with criticism of Mr Cameron's approach, although others have expressed concerns in private.

Other pledges in the online campaign are to tougher sentencing, more police, and ending early release schemes, an emergency pension fund, value for money in public services, cutting family taxes and increasing taxes on pollution, and securing fairer trade and aid.

Tories estimate the total number of viewers will be about 21 million.

Conservative Party chair, Caroline Spelman, said: "This is a totally different approach to campaigning for a political party. By using this new type of campaigning to set out the Conservative Party's vision in the run up to the conference season, David Cameron is demonstrating his fresh approach to politics.

"The country wants a change in the type of politics in this country and politicians who can really provide the solutions to the challenges the country now faces."
