Sara Hiom, Cancer Research UK's director of health information, said the "Jade effect" had brought "cancer awareness" messages into living rooms across the UK.

Miss Goody, who became famous after appearing on Channel 4 show Big brother, died at her home in Upshire, Essex, in March after losing a fight with cervical cancer.

Thousands lined streets on Saturday as her funeral cortege made its way from Essex to London. And hundreds watched as the funeral service was broadcast live on giant screens outside a church in Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

Mrs Hiom said hits on Cancer Research's website had multiplied since Miss Goody's illness made the headlines. Officials said coverage of Miss Goody's funeral would probably further increase awareness.

"Media coverage of Jade Goody's tragic plight has brought important cervical cancer awareness messages into living rooms across the UK," she said.

"The huge increase in people seeking information about cervical cancer following Jade's diagnosis has become known as the 'Jade effect'.

"The cervical cancer pages viewed on... Cancer Research UK's information website leapt from around 108,000 in January to almost 390,000 in February."

She added: "Jade's story has raised awareness of cervical cancer which has led to hundreds of thousands of people contacting Cancer Research UK for information on the disease as the number of hits to our website, CancerHelp.org shows. Her legacy will be to help save lives."
