Johnson claims over smear campaign

Boris Johnson claimed that he was the victim of an "absolutely ruthless" dirty tricks campaign aimed at derailing his bid to become mayor of London.

The Tory candidate accused his opponents of deliberately "lying" to misrepresent his policies. Campaign aides also said that internet hackers had broken into his email system, bringing down his computer system for several hours last week.

Meanwhile, rival Ken Livingstone joined peace activists in support of the anti-war movement. The Mayor of London was on the campaign trail in Islington, north London, where he attacked Conservative rival Mr Johnson for supporting the Iraq war.

Mr Livingstone said: "The war has killed hundreds of thousands of people, created a firmer basis for terrorist organisations in Iraq and made our city more of a target for terrorist attacks. I am proud as Mayor to support the anti-war movement and to join the millions of people who demonstrated against the war in Iraq."

Mr Johnson is battling to oust Labour's Mr Livingstone in the mayoral elections on May 1 in what is an increasingly bitter and hard fought campaign.

The Sunday Telegraph said that there was no suggestion that Mr Livingstone was in any way involved in the dirty tricks campaign. Mr Johnson said: "They are doing blatant misrepresentations of our position, absolutely ruthlessly going around lying about what we are offering. They are literally going round houses knocking on the door and lying.

"There's been lots of sub-radar stuff, really abusive. They've read every column I've ever written to see if they can find something to turn into a smear about a position I don't hold."

A spokeswoman for Mr Livingstone's campaign told newspaper: "Boris Johnson uniquely claims it is a smear to quote what he actually said.

"Tory MPs last year persistently tried to amend the law to remove the Mayor of London's guarantee of the Freedom Pass (for elderly travellers) and, despite his claims, Boris Johnson has refused to match Ken Livingstone's unequivocal commitment to fund its 24-hour operation.

"With a record like that we don't doubt he doesn't want Londoners to know about it but it is scarcely a smear to say what he actually stood for."
