Johnson on Tories' Mayor shortlist

Boris Johnson was named on a shortlist of four contenders to become Conservative candidate for Mayor of London.

The Henley MP was among would-be candidates grilled by a party panel in the hunt for someone to take on Labour's Ken Livingstone in 2008.

The contenders will now take part in a primary election, in which anyone on the London electoral register may vote, whether they are members of the Conservative Party or not.

Would-be contenders were interviewed by a panel of Conservative figures, including senior members of the London party, who whittled them down.

A Conservative spokeswoman said that the panel choosing the shortlist was "independent" of the party's leadership, and that no candidate would be imposed by head office.

More than 50 people submitted applications to stand against Labour's Ken Livingstone by Monday's deadline, and the spokeswoman said that all of their claims would be considered.

The usually well-informed website conservativehome.com reported on Tuesday that six candidates were in the running to join the shortlist.

All party members in the capital will automatically receive a ballot paper. Anyone else wishing to vote in the Tory primary can register from July 23, regardless of whether they are a member of the Conservatives or any other party.

A postal vote will end on September 26 and the chosen candidate will be named at the end of the month.

It is understood that may mean the candidate being announced immediately before the Blackpool annual conference, which runs from September 30 to October 3.
