Johnston kidnappers cut demands

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has reported progress in efforts to free kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston.

He said negotiators had persuaded the captors to reduce their demands, saying they initially had issued seven demands.

"During debate, those demands were reduced to three," Haniyeh told reporters, confirming earlier reports that officials were negotiating with the kidnappers.

He did not say what the remaining demands were.

Johnston, from Lochgilphead in Argyll, was seized at gunpoint in Gaza City on March 12 and has not been seen or heard since then.

Palestinian security forces know Johnston's whereabouts, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

He suggested troops were reluctant to use force for fear harm might come to the 44-year-old hostage.

"We want to protect his life and finish this safely," Mr Abbas was quoted as saying by a Fatah-affiliated website.
