The reporters - believed to be Isambard Wilkinson, Colin Freeman and Damien McElroy, who work for the Telegraph Group - have apparently been accused of using abusive and foul language against the country and its leadership.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware that three journalists have been advised to leave Pakistan. We are seeking clarification."

She added: "We believe media freedom is essential to economic and social development and stability and actively support the evolution of a free and fair press in Pakistan."

There has been growing concern in the West since Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency last Saturday, claiming it was necessary because of threats against the nation.

Since then, thousands of people including lawyers and activists from opposition parties, have been arrested.

Opponents have accused General Musharraf of taking the step to prevent the courts ruling that he cannot serve as president and head of the army simultaneously.

Pakistan's Deputy Information Minister Tariq Azim told the Associated Press that the offending story had appeared on Friday, and the men had now been given 72 hours to leave.

A Telegraph spokeswoman said the newspaper was trying to establish the facts. A statement is expected later.

"There is no comment at this stage," she said.
