Karadzic fights crimes extradition

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is battling extradition from Serbia to the Netherlands, where he faces trial for genocide.

Karadzic's lawyers have been given three days to appeal against the extradition ruling by a Serbian judge.

If the extradition goes ahead he will stand trial at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague on war crimes charges - including masterminding the siege of Sarajevo and the massacre of 8,000 Muslims at Srebrenica during the Bosnian war of 1992-95.

Meanwhile, the arrest of the former Bosnian Serb leader could help pave the way for Serbia finally to join the European Union, Foreign Secretary David Miliband signalled.

Attending a meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Mr Miliband said that the actions of the Serbian government "bodes very well for long-term relations".

Karadzic was arrested while travelling on a bus in Belgrade, Serbia. The one-time psychiatrist had been practising alternative medicine during his decade as a fugitive from international justice.

The Financial Times reports British and US intelligence helped trap Karadzic. The newspaper says they co-operated with Serbian intelligence services, using both signals and human intelligence to track him down.

Sveta Vujacic, Karadzic's lawyer, said his client was in good spirits but was not co-operating with police.

The hunt for Karadzic's right-hand man, General Ratko Mladic, continues.

Now aged 66, his whereabouts are not known, but is believed that he could be hiding in Serbia with the help of hardliners in the police and military and Serb loyalists.
