Kenya flight ban extended to Monday

The Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) said all holiday airline flights to Kenya were cancelled up to and including next Monday, January 14.
The decision came as the Foreign Office (FO) continued to advise against all but essential travel to Kenya where more than 500 people have been killed in post-election violence.
The FTO was left with little choice but to continue the ban as there was no sign of an end to the dispute over the election result that put President Mwai Kibaki in power.
"Planes will be flying out empty to bring back people who were due to finish their holidays over the next few days," said FTO spokesman Graham Lancaster.
He added that a decision on charter flights due to fly to Kenya from the UK later next week would be made in the next few days.
Scheduled services run by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Kenya Airways have continued to operate between the UK and Kenya. But it is a week since any charter flights have taken any passengers from the UK to Kenya.
There have been no reports of any Britons getting caught up in the violence that has been confined mainly to urban areas.
If the charter flight ban continues, there will soon be few Britons left holidaying in Kenya, a country that is heavily dependent on tourism.
UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband has offered fresh backing for the mediation mission by the chairman of the African Union, Ghana's President John Kufuor.
