Kershaw admits drink-driving charge

DJ Andy Kershaw has pleaded guilty to drink-driving and breaching a restraining order banning him from approaching his ex-girlfriend.

Kershaw, 48, admitted the offences when he appeared at the Deputy High Bailiff's Court in Douglas on the Isle of Man, where he and his former partner, Juliette Banner, live.

Kershaw was arrested last month for breaching a restraining order banning him from approaching Ms Banner, the mother of his two children, Sonny, nine, and Dolly, eight. He spent six days in the cells until he was bailed.

The former BBC Radio One presenter spoke only to confirm his name and address and enter his guilty pleas during the five-minute hearing.

Kershaw, who presents a world music show on Radio 3, stood in the dock dressed in a green jacket, scarf, blue shirt, jeans and baseball pumps as the charges were read to him.

The court heard that on August 1 this year he was convicted under the Protection from Harassment Act and banned from approaching Ms Banner or going near her house in Peel, on the island. But on August 29 he broke the order by attempting to enter her property and causing her fear, alarm or distress.

On September 13 he was stopped by police on a road in Peel while driving a Toyota car. He was breathalysed and gave a reading of 57 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 30.

Kershaw's solicitor, Nigel Cordwell, asked for the case to be adjourned for the preparation of reports.

Alastair Montgomerie, the Deputy High Bailiff, told Kershaw: "You have pleaded guilty to these two offences. I have not heard the facts. Based on the advice of Mr Cordwell, requesting the matter be adjourned for the preparation of social inquiry reports, I agree with that application and I am adjourning this case until Tuesday, October 19. As I have not heard any of the facts, the court is indicating all sentencing options are open."

Kershaw was bailed on condition that he does not drive a car and co-operates with the Probation Service, along with the original restraining order conditions that he does not approach Ms Banner, observes a 9pm to 7am curfew and does not enter pubs or restaurants selling alcohol.
