Knife gang steal Lowry works
04 January 2007
The raiders tied up leading collector Ivan Aird, 41, at his home in Cheshire and threatened to kill his two-year-old daughter before making off with a number of prized paintings.
His wife Louise, 40, opened the door of their house in Brackenwood Drive, Cheadle Hulme, to what she thought was the postman, only for three men to rush in and overpower the couple.
The gang threatened them with knives as Mrs Aird held her two-year-old daughter Sabrina in her arms.
Among the paintings stolen were The Viaduct, valued at more than £700,000, and The Tanker Entering the Tyne, worth up to £600,000.
Detectives said they believed the burglars knew exactly what they were looking for.
Police have released photographs of the stolen paintings in order to help to trace the people responsible.
Officers have also worked with the victims to piece together an e-fit of one of the offenders, described as white, in his 30s, with a round face. He was wearing a fluorescent jacket. Another of the men is described as mixed race and the third was wearing a balaclava. All three men spoke with local accents.
There were also reports of a light blue estate car or people carrier seen outside the house at the time of the raid.
