Labour and Tories level in polls

Labour and the Tories are virtually neck-and-neck in the polls as Gordon Brown finally gets the keys to Number 10.

Research by YouGov for Sky News suggests Mr Brown's assent to the top job has boosted his party, which now trails the Conservatives by a single point - 37% to 36%.

The new leader rated ahead of David Cameron on trust, leadership, the NHS, the economy and education - but lower on foreign policy and charisma.

Meanwhile, voters did not seem too distressed at the idea of Tony Blair's departure.

Some 45% of those surveyed thought that being "heir to Blair" was a "bad thing".

YouGov interviewed 2,080 people between June 22 and 25.
