Labour choosing for 'must-win' seat

Labour is due to finally pick its candidate for the Glasgow East by-election, after party insiders admitted that defeat will cost Gordon Brown his job.

In the wake of the last-minute withdrawal of former favourite George Ryan on Friday, Margaret Curran is expected to be officially selected.

Opponents have branded Mrs Curran Labour's fifth choice for the contest, claiming the Prime Minister "press-ganged" her into standing after a handful of others rejected his personal pleas.

As a sitting Glasgow MSP, she has also made it clear she would only serve in Westminster part-time until the next General Election.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond claimed the SNP campaign was already off to a "flying start" with its candidate John Mason.

"Labour, by contrast, are in complete meltdown - both locally and nationally," he said.

"This is their 'lost weekend' - they don't have a leader in Scotland, they don't have a candidate in Glasgow East, and they have a Prime Minister who refuses to come to the constituency."

Tory leader David Cameron also sought to capitalise on Labour's woes, accusing the party of treating voters "like fools" by installing a fifth-choice candidate.

Mr Cameron, who is visiting the constituency with Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith, said: "The voters will have a choice. A choice between rewarding a Labour Party rudderless in London, leaderless in Scotland and in disarray in Glasgow, or the Nationalists who view the vote as just another chance to further their agenda of breaking up Britain.

"Or a positive change with the Conservatives. Davena Rankin would be a first class and full-time MP, in contrast to Labour's latest favoured candidate who is fifth choice and wants to be a part-time MP."
