Labour deputy hopefuls' union views

Candidates for Labour's deputy leadership have revealed "strong differences" on trade union issues, according to a new report.

The six contenders agreed on some areas, such as improving work/life balance, boosting equality and giving unions the right to negotiate on pensions as well as pay, said Labour Research magazine.

But the politicians are divided on controversial areas such as private sector involvement in public services and working hours, said the magazine.

Jon Cruddas, the only backbencher in the race, told the magazine he wanted the private sector's involvement in the NHS to be limited, while Peter Hain said the involvement of companies in the public sector was acceptable where necessary to clear backlogs.

Hazel Blears said there should be no ideological barrier to going outside the public sector if it improved services, while Alan Johnson said private sector innovation and competition could could be "hugely beneficial".

Harriet Harman, Mr Hain and Mr Cruddas were all critical of what happened to workers during the bitter Gate Gourmet dispute at Heathrow Airport two years ago.

But Hilary Benn, Mr Johnson and Ms Blears all opposed the reintroduction of secondary strike action.

Labour Research editor Nathalie Towner said: "The range of responses shows that voters are being presented with a real choice."
