Labour edging by-election, says poll

Labour has edged ahead of the SNP in the Glenrothes by-election battle, a poll suggested.

The Scottish Sunday Express survey put Labour on 26.5% and the Nationalists on 23%.

But almost a quarter of those quizzed said they were undecided, suggesting the contest is still wide open.

In the poll of 1,000 eligible voters, which was carried out by the paper, the Conservatives were trailing with 4% and the Liberal Democrats had just 2%.

An identical poll by the paper six weeks ago gave the SNP a 13-point lead.

A total of 19% of those quizzed said they would not vote for any candidate.

Bookmakers said the by-election was too close to call.

Ladbrokes are now offering odds of 5/6 on both parties - despite the SNP having been the early favourites on 1/4. By contrast the odds on Labour were 5/2 when the election was announced.

The Glenrothes by-election is being held following the death of Labour MP John MacDougall, who had a majority of 10,664 at the last election.

The eight candidates contesting the by-election on Thursday November 6 are: Morag Balfour, Scots Socialists; Peter Grant, SNP; Maurice Golden, Conservative; Lindsay Roy, Labour; Kris Seunarine, Ukip; Harry Wills, Lib Dems; Louise McLeary, Solidarity; Jim Parker, Senior Citizens' Unity Party.
