The YouGov poll for GMTV has Labour on 38%, the Tories on 35% and the Liberal Democrats on 15% support if there was an immediate general election.
There is widespread support for such an early poll, with 42% of voters telling the pollsters they would like to see an election this year. Only 22% were actively opposed to such a move.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown gets a good verdict overall for his performance since taking office on June 27, with 45% saying he has done very well or fairly well.
But when it comes to tackling anti-social behaviour, he gets a rougher ride from the public.
According to the poll, 30% think Mr Brown is doing a very poor job in tackling it and 29% a fairly poor job.
YouGov interviewed 2,154 adults between August 29 and August 31. Last week, Labour's lead was as much as 8% over the Tories.
