Labour poll boost as Blair quits

Tony Blair's impending departure from No 10 has seen Labour's poll rating climb to its highest for eight months, according to a survey.

The YouGov poll for The Sunday Times put Labour on 34%, three points up on last month and four points behind the Conservatives, who are one point down on 38%.

The Liberal Democrats are also down one on 15%.

However the poll contained a sting in the tail for Gordon Brown, showing support for Labour slipping back down to 32% if he is leader, ten points behind the Tories who rise to 42%.

The poll found that by 50% to 31% people said that they did not like the Chancellor and by 35% to 32% that he would not be a good representative of Britain abroad.

In contrast, they thought by 49% to 46% that overall Mr Blair had been a good Prime Minister.

YouGov questioned 1,962 electors online, across Britain between May 10 to 11.
