Lawyers acting for Hicham Yezza, who was due to be returned to Algeria on Sunday, said the Home Office had cancelled his deportation after a judicial review was sought at the High Court in London.
In a statement issued on a website set up to campaign for his release, Mr Yezza described the development as a "small but significant" victory.
The 30-year-old, an administrator at, and former student of, the University of Nottingham, was arrested along with another man on May 14 on suspicion of possessing extremist material.
Both men were released without charge on May 20, but Mr Yezza was rearrested in relation to immigration matters.
More than 300 students held a protest at the university on Wednesday to campaign against the deportation of Mr Yezza, who was cleared of any involvement in terrorist activity after police found he had been passed an al Qaida training manual by a postgraduate student who needed the document as part of research for a dissertation.
In a statement issued on Friday night, Mr Yezza said: "I have been overwhelmed by the show of support and solidarity that I have received.
"I have been truly blessed and lucky, having so many friends and supporters visiting me, calling me and sending messages of support.
"Thanks to all of you, my deportation has been put on hold - a small yet significant victory."
A spokesman for the Home Office said it did not comment on individual cases.
