Lib Dem leader rivals urge change

Liberal Democrat leadership contenders Chris Huhne and Nick Clegg have pledged to change the face of British politics if they head the party.

Mr Huhne, MP for Eastleigh, said under him the party would lead a Liberal Democrat "revolution" of the British people."

And Sheffield Hallam MP Mr Clegg said: "We can quite simply re-invent UK politics forever."

The leadership contenders were speaking in Plymouth, Devon, at the latest round of hustings, and the new leader will be announced next month after four more gatherings.

Mr Huhne, who spoke first, said: "This is a party which is about changing the system of government."

The Liberal Democrats under him would "change the country and not just run it." He added: "We will lead a revolution of the British people."

Mr Clegg said the leadership contest provided the Liberal Democrats "with a great opportunity to show what we are as a party at a time of insipid politics" with a "Tweedledum, tweedledee" two-party system in Westminster."

The Liberal Democrats, he said was a party of "hope and optimism," adding: "I think we must break the stifling grip of two-party politics in this country.

"We need to reach out to people's hopes and aspirations. Third party status is not good enough for me and it is certainly not good enough for this country.

"I think we can quite simply re-invent politics in this country forever," he said.
