Litter row death witness appeal

The detective hunting yobs who killed a man in a row over litter has urged witnesses to put aside their "misguided loyalty" and come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons said there are people who know the identity of Evren Anil's killers but do not want to be seen as a "grass".

Mr Anil, 23, died after confronting a youth who threw a half-eaten chocolate bar through his sister's car window as they waited at traffic lights in Crystal Palace, south east London.

He suffered a serious head wound and fell into a coma. He died eight days later at King's College Hospital.

Mr Lyons said: "I know that there are witnesses who have not come forward and I know there are witnesses who are aware of their identity.

"They have refused to come forward for ridiculous reasons - misguided loyalty, they do not want to be seen as a 'grass'.

"But we are not talking about a stolen bottle of whisky off the back of a lorry. We are talking about a young man's life."

Mr Lyons said some people were questioning why Mr Anil had got out of the car.

"When they produced the knife he tried to get back in the car," he added. "People are entitled to challenge these yobs' behaviour."

Anyone with information should contact 020 8721 4205, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
