London 2012 praised by inspectors

International Olympics inspectors have given London's preparations for the 2012 Games a glowing report.

Marking London's progress out of 10 at the end of the three-day inspection, Denis Oswald, chair of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) co-ordination commission, said: "9.75 - nobody's perfect."

Mr Oswald said the IOC's 18-strong coordination commission had been treated to an "unprecedented" level of detail during a series of update presentations.

How London's transport network will cope with the huge demand that will be made on it during the Games was the only dark cloud he could predict.

But Mr Oswald praised London 2012 for putting the experts in place to deal with this challenge and whatever security issues may be thrown up in four years' time when the Games begin in London.

Mr Oswald remained convinced that the Olympics would be in safe hands. He said: "We are confident that we will have a spectacular Games. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) has put the athletes at the centre of their Games.

"This certainly is a guarantee that the Games will be of excellent quality for the athletes and the best competition for the athletes in the world."

But Mr Oswald noted that the Olympic flag will be handed over to London in just a few weeks at the Beijing Olympics and "the pressure will move to London".

The commission ended its third full inspection in London as building work began at the Olympic Stadium - three months ahead of schedule.

Now that tons of soil have been moved and the bowl of the 80,000-seater stadium can clearly be seen taking shape, the drive is on to get the project in east London completed by 2011.
