Lottery to tackle social problems

Millions of pounds of lottery funding will be spent on environmental schemes to tackle youth crime and other social problems.

The Big Lottery Fund, which distributes lottery cash, has announced £47 million worth of "green" social regeneration projects.

It is channelling the money to five national organisations across England as part of a scheme called "changing spaces".

Collectively, the projects aim to use environmental projects to help youngsters who may be prone to youth crime or other social problems.

A grant of £8.3 million will go towards Crime Concern's community space challenge, which funds 70 environmental projects for young people who may be at risk of anti-social behaviour or offending.

Activities include allotment developments, litter clean-ups, graffiti removal and wasteland regeneration.

Another £2 million grant to the Eco Challenge project will teach 11 to 14-year-olds in the lowest performing local education authorities about the environment and conservation.

A grant of £15.6 million goes towards a "green spaces for people" project to provide more community gardens and games areas.

And a £10 million grant goes to the Plunkett Foundation to promote locally produced food.

Imperial College London gets £11.7 million to fund projects which will study natural habitats across England.
