Lubbock suspect released on bail

A 37-year-old man was released on bail after being questioned about the death of a man found in a swimming pool at entertainer Michael Barrymore's home.

Police said the suspect - named by sources as Jonathan Kenny - had been released on bail pending further inquiries. Kenny, of Blackpool, Lancashire, was arrested on Thursday along with Mr Barrymore, 55, and Justin Merritt, 32.

The three men were questioned about the alleged murder and sexual assault of butcher Stuart Lubbock, who was found dead at Barrymore's home in Roydon, Essex, six years ago.

Police sources said Barrymore, who lives in London, and Merritt, from Harlow, Essex, were released on bail on Friday night pending further police inquiries.

Barrymore made no comment as he was driven away from South Woodham Ferrers Police Station, Essex.

His lawyer, Henri Brandman, said: "Michael has not been charged with any offence. He is fully co-operating with the police in their enquiries. He categorically denies the allegations that have been made."

Mr Lubbock, 31, of Harlow, was found dead at Barrymore's home in March 2001. He had been one of a number of guests at a party the night before his body was discovered.

Post-mortem results showed he had suffered severe internal injuries. Ecstasy, cocaine and alcohol were found in his bloodstream.

No-one was charged with any offence in relation to Mr Lubbock's death. Barrymore later accepted a police caution for drugs offences.

Essex police then reopened the inquiry in December 2006 after a review of the first investigation.
