'Ludicrous' to free hotel fall dad

The psychiatrist who convinced Greek judges that a father was mentally incapable of murdering his son when he threw him from a hotel balcony said it would be "ludicrous" to set him free.

John Hogan, 33, has been receiving treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Athens since a court on the island of Crete cleared him of murder, ruling he was suffering an "earthquake" of psychosis when he took Liam's life.

Less than a month after his trial heard how he was in a suicidal and delirious state, doctors at his hospital were reportedly claiming he would soon be fit enough to return to Britain.

The Hospital of Attica, near the Greek capital, released a statement confirming Hogan was showing "signs of recovery" and could return to Britain for further treatment in the "near future".

Athanasios Kosmopoulos, managing director of the hospital, said Hogan's family had made a request for him to return home. Once a departure date is agreed on by magistrates, he could be flying back within three to six months.

But Ioannis Nestoros, described as Greek's most eminent clinical psychiatrist, said: "In my mind it is very unlikely someone who has been in hospital for such a long time and considered such a suicide risk could be set free.

"I have not examined him in recent weeks but this sounds very optimistic. It is very unlikely that in three months he would be good enough to be left alone. Nothing is impossible in medicine but when I saw him when he was in the court I believed he was a long long way from being set free. To me this all sounds ludicrously optimistic."

Yannis Papazogolou, spokesman for the British Embassy in Athens, said he had received no indication of Hogan's release. He said: "We have received no contact whatsoever to suggest this might be true."

Hogan, originally from Bristol, told the court last month he felt "no guilt" after hurling Liam from the fourth floor of a hotel in Crete then jumping himself with two-year-old Mia.

After he was cleared of murder and referred to a psychiatric hospital indefinitely, his ex-wife, Natasha, 35, claimed her son had "lost his life for nothing". She was said to be "devastated" by the latest reports that Hogan could be released soon.
