Major to attend Yeltsin funeral

Sir John Major will attend the funeral of former Russian president Boris Yeltsin in Moscow on Wednesday, the Foreign Office has said.

The former prime minister will attend in a personal capacity, while the Duke of York will represent the Queen at the ceremony.

The British ambassador to Russia, Tony Brenton, will also be there.

Mr Yeltsin, who engineered the final collapse of the Soviet Union, died of heart failure on Monday afternoon at the age of 76.

He is to be buried at Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery, where many of Russia's most prominent figures are interred.
