Man and daughter in waterfall death

A father and his three-year-old daughter were killed after venturing from a sightseeing path and plunging 50-feet into a river below.

The 33-year-old and his little girl were found dead around an hour after they fell from the Nantcol waterfall beauty spot in Llanbedr, near Harlech, North Wales.

The victims, from Manchester, were part of a family of four adults and two children who were sightseeing while on holiday at the nearby Shell Island campsite.

It is believed the father and daughter had left the signposted track around the waterfall and stepped into an unsafe area. They plunged into a five-metre deep pool of freezing water.

A massive underwater search was launched involving police, fire and ambulance crews. They were assisted by two amateur divers and a heat-seeking infra-red scanner onboard the North Wales Police helicopter.

A spokeswoman for North Wales Police said a joint investigation between officers and the local authority, Gwynnedd Council, was taking place. She added that the Health and Safety Executive had been informed of the deaths.

Separately, a man died and a child is in hospital after both got into trouble while "boogie boarding" at a popular beach, the coastguard said.

A woman dialled 999 at 7pm on Sunday to report that people were entering the water at Fistral Beach, in Newquay, Cornwall, to try to get the pair out. Falmouth Coastguard rescue team was mobilised, a helicopter was scrambled and the Newquay lifeboat launched.

The child was semi-conscious and the man was given CPR until the rescue helicopter landed at the beach. Both the man and child were airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Treliske along with paramedics and a policeman.

The man was later pronounced dead. The child's condition is unknown.
