Charles William Acquaah, 22, of Greenside Road, Croydon, south London, will appear in court on Monday.
Mr Abbey died from a single stab wound to the heart after he was attacked in front of his three-year-old daughter at a bus stop in Croydon on Thursday.
The 26-year-old, from Ghana, died on his way to see his newborn son.
Mr Abbey, who was known to his friends as King, and his young daughter were just a few hundred yards away from Mayday hospital when he was attacked.
His wife had given birth earlier that day.
Police arrested two other men in connection with his death, aged 36 and 39, who remain in custody at a south London police station.
They also appealed for an Asian woman who gave Mr Abbey first aid to come forward.
Acquaah will appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court.
