Grandmother Rosemary Dove, 68, died as her son and husband confronted thieves apparently raiding their farm in County Durham for diesel on Sunday night.
A Durham Police spokesman said a 21-year-old man arrested at Coundon, near the farm at Bishop Middleham, has been charged with a series of offences.
He said: "He is accused of wounding 43-year-old Michael Dove with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft of diesel fuel, theft of a Mitsubishi L200 pick-up and having no insurance.
The man is expected to appear before South Durham magistrates in Newton Aycliffe on Thursday.
Mrs Dove died after she and her husband Frank, 67, spotted a man who appeared to be stealing red diesel.
Mr Dove and his son chased the thief to a field, where the younger man was badly injured when he was hit by the getaway vehicle.
As the grandmother, who had run into the farmhouse to call 999, described what had happened, she collapsed and died.
Mr and Mrs Dove were returning home to the farm after visiting an agricultural show in Scotland when they found the alleged thieves.
