Colette, 16, was found dead in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, in October 1983.
Paul Stewart Hutchinson, 50, of Nottingham, was charged with the teenager's murder, and is due to appear at the city's magistrates' court, a Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said.
In November last year, detectives investigating her murder revealed that they had taken more 100 calls from members of the public after disclosing a significant breakthrough in the inquiry.
Officers now have a DNA profile of the killer who abducted, sexually assaulted and then murdered the young victim, before leaving her body in a field near her home.
The forensic evidence also helped Nottinghamshire Police prove that the murderer went into the Generous Briton pub in nearby Costock shortly after the killing and that Colette was in a red Ford Fiesta stolen on the day she died.
Colette, a trainee hairdresser, had decided to visit her boyfriend at his home less than a mile away in Willowbrook, Keyworth, at 8pm on October 30 1983.
Police were alerted when the teenager failed to arrive and her body was found at 9am the following day in a field off Thurlby Lane, said police.
Colette's murder was the first appeal shown on Crimewatch, on Thursday June 7 1984.
It was featured again on the programme's 20th anniversary.
