Man charged over hit-and-run death

A 24-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a six-year-old girl who was killed in a hit-and-run collision.

Ross Robinson is accused of causing the death of Demi Leigh Royle by dangerous driving, Merseyside Police.

The youngster was returning from a visit to shops with an adult family friend in Huyton, Liverpool, on Friday night when she was knocked down by a Fiat Ducato van.

Robinson, also of Huyton, is due to appear at Huyton Magistrates' Court.

Demi Leigh was walking with a 29-year-old woman and a five-year-old girl in Astley Road when the van turned off Hillside Avenue and into their path.

She was taken to Whiston Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The five-year-old girl was also taken to Whiston Hospital suffering from facial injuries, while the woman was uninjured but treated for shock.

In a statement released through police, the family said: ""Demi Leigh was a loving and lively little girl. She loved to dance and was a member of the Millenium Morris Dancing group based at St George's Hall in Huyton.

"Everything she did made us laugh. Her not being here will leave a hole that can never be filled. She will always be with us in our hearts and our memories."

Demi Leigh was one of seven children - she had four brothers and two sisters.
