Mark Weston was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the death of Vikki Thompson, who disappeared while walking her dog down a country lane.
She was discovered unconscious, with serious head injuries, by the side of a railway line near her home in Ascott-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, hours later.
The 30-year-old died at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, six days after the attack.
Judge Julian Hall remanded Weston, of Ascott-under-Wychwood, in custody at the half-hour hearing at Oxford Crown Court.
Mrs Thompson's family said she is still "desperately missed" by them all. In a statement, her husband Jonathon Thompson and mother Margaret Simpson said: "Vikki was only 30 years old. She was a loving wife and mother to Matthew and Jennifer.
"She was much loved by all her family and friends and is desperately missed.
"Time has passed by now, but still we never forget the loss we suffered when Vikki was taken away from us."
Thames Valley Police launched a fresh appeal for information about the death four years ago.
Detective Superintendent Barry Halliday, head of the major crime review team (MCRT) said: "The review of such cases is not a new concept by Thames Valley Police. This is one of a number of cases being progressed by the MCRT and our communities and neighbourhoods can be assured all unresolved cases remain open and are subject to careful regular review by major crime detectives."
