Man dies in police pursuit crash

A man has died after crashing his car while being pursued by police in Liverpool, a force spokeswoman said.

The blue Ford Focus was spotted by a patrol on Riverside Drive in south Liverpool around 3.45am on Sunday.

The police car put on its blue flashing lights but the driver did not pull over, the spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said.

The Focus continued through the city centre and into the Vauxhall area of north Liverpool.

The pursuit ended around four miles from where it started, after the Focus crashed into railings at the junction of Great Howard Street and Blackstone Street in Vauxhall.

The driver, a man in his 30s from the Aigburth area of Liverpool, was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

No one else was in the car and no one else was injured.

Police have not yet released the name of the deceased and no further details were issued by the force.

A spokeswoman added, "The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission."
