Man held after crash kills toddler

A man has been arrested after a toddler was killed in a road crash.

The two-year-old boy was in the road on Hackle Street, Clayton, Greater Manchester, when he was struck by a silver estate car at 4.15pm on Wednesday, police said.

He was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary where he died later.

A 45-year-old man immediately handed himself in to Grey Mare Lane police station, said a Greater Manchester Police spokesman.

The man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently being interviewed by officers.

Police appealed for witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Sergeant Steve Foster said: "This is a tragic incident in which a two-year-old boy has sadly lost his life and this is clearly a distressing time for his family and the wider community.

"We now have a team of officers in the area speaking to potential witnesses. If anyone saw what happened I would ask them to call us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to call the road policing unit on 0161 856 3572.
