The 26-year-old victim suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a Volkswagen Golf outside Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, on Sunday.
The incident came in the wake of Aston Villa's 5-1 defeat of Birmingham City, but police dismissed speculation that it was fuelled by team rivalry. Both men involved were Aston Villa fans, it was confirmed.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "Following some reports in the media, we would like to clarify that the 26-year-old man who died following the Villa match yesterday was a Villa fan. His identity is not being released at this stage.
"The 20-year-old male driver of the vehicle allegedly involved in the collision is currently in custody. We can confirm that he is also a Villa fan. The motive for the incident is unclear at this stage and we are continuing to investigate."
Police confirmed that the victim's family have been contacted.
A number of witnesses dialled 999 following the collision in Aston Hall Road at around 3pm.
But despite the efforts of paramedics, nothing could be done to save the man, who died shortly after arriving at City Hospital in Birmingham.
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said on Sunday: "On arrival at the scene, crews found a man that had been in collision with car. The man was treated at the scene for multiple serious injuries and transferred to City Hospital on blue lights.
"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and then hospital staff, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital."
