Man held in police firearm incident

A man in his 20s has been arrested following a struggle with two police officers during which a firearm was discharged.

West Midlands Police said the constables, who were unarmed, approached two men acting suspiciously in Kilby Avenue, in the Ladywood area of central Birmingham, on Tuesday morning.

The officers suffered minor injuries in the ensuing scuffle, but not as a result of the firearm going off.

The weapon was recovered and the area sealed off to allow forensic examination.

Police are still trying to find the second man, who fled the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance service said one officer was taken to hospital for treatment to a hand injury, along with the arrested man, who had suffered a head injury.

The second policeman was treated at the scene.
