Man held over stabbing death

A man arrested on suspicion of murdering a social worker may be questioned by police if a doctor agrees he is well enough.

Philip Ellison, 47, received multiple stab wounds during Monday's home visit to a house on Glebe Close in Fulwood, Preston.

The 51-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene in an "agitated state, Lancashire Police said.

A force spokeswoman said that the man was being held under section two of the Mental Health Act so a psychiatric assessment could take place and was detained in secure accommodation.

Police confirmed they were not looking for anyone else.

Mr Ellison, of Leyland Road, Penwortham, Preston, leaves a widow and three sons.

The killing took place in a two-storey house on a cul-de-sac, part of a small estate of newly-built housing association properties.

A number of the houses, according to neighbours, are kept by the local authority for people who need care while living in the community.

Neighbours said there had never been any trouble before and spoke of their shock.
