Man held over woman's tractor death

A man has been arrested after a village postmistress was killed by a tractor.

Avid horsewoman Jane Wilson, 53, died at a farm near Carlisle, Cumbria on December 1 last year.

Cumbria Police initially said her death was not suspicious, but later arrested a 40-year-old man at his home on suspicion of murder.

A police spokesman refused to comment on whether the suspect was known to the victim.

Jane was married to Robert Wilson, and had a grown up son and daughter, Lee and Sharon Kennedy.

She was killed by a tractor at the farm where she lived in the Kirkandrews-on-Eden area of Burgh-by-Sands. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news has shocked the quiet picturesque village, where Jane was a popular postmistress as well as a talented horsewoman.

She was well known throughout Cumbria after winning a number of equestrian titles.

Police are now appealing to the community to come forward with information about Jane prior to her death.

Detective Inspector Paul Marshall, who is leading the inquiry team, said: "I would encourage people to help us build up a picture of what Jane's life was like in the months leading up to her untimely death."
